Expert summary
San Francisco is a major city along the coast of Northern California on the San Francisco Peninsula. The Spanish were the first Europeans to discover and settle on the peninsula in 1776. The California Gold Rush served as a catalyst for the city's growth and prominence. Following the discovery of gold and silver the population skyrocketed and entrepreneurs moved to the city. In 1906 San Francisco suffered from a powerful earthquake and subsequent fires which destroyed the city. The city reasserted its financial importance in the US during the Great Depression when not a single San Francisco based bank failed. Since the 1960s the city has become a center for counter cultural movements especially the gay rights movement.
